Multilingual paratextuality in the poetry of Valmar Adams and Johannes Barbarus 1918–1939

The poetry of Valmar Adams and Johannes Barbarus from 1918 to 1939 is characterized by an abundance of fragments in other languages. This period marked a turning point for the Estonian language(s) in general: the written language was standardized, the National Minorities Cultural Autonomy Act was adopted, and poetry was published in multiple languages as well as in multilingual form. Against this historical backdrop, the poetic effect of multilingualism stands out as an interesting feature in Estonian-language poetry, and among the multilingual techniques employed by poets of the period, paratextual code-switching is the most prevalent. This article asks how multilingual poetics function – specifically, what networks of meaning emerge in multilingual poetic texts and how multilingualism shapes the reader’s perception. Multilingual paratextuality has received relatively little attention in studies of literary multilingualism, even though both paratexts and multilingualism are meaningfully connected to the boundaries and frameworks of the literary text. In the poetry of Adams and Barbarus, five main types of relationship emerge between foreign-language paratexts and the poems they accompany: a metaphorical relationship, or a figurative connection between the language or motifs of the paratext and the poem; a translational relationship, in which the content of the paratext is repeated in translation within the poem or in another paratext; a relationship based on educational and cultural affiliation, in which the paratext connects the poem to cultural texts in another language; literal repetition of the paratext within the poem; and a metonymic relationship between the linguistic choices made in the paratext and the geographical or linguistic space alluded to within the text. A comparison of multilingual paratextuality in the two poets’ works revealed that, in Adams’s case, the connection between the paratext and the poem is often more indirect and playful, whereas in Barbarus’s case it is more translational and metonymic; however, in both cases, references to Western European culture play a significant role.
